I highly recommend purchasing these nibs from Dan! Lamy’s steel nibs are, as a baseline, inexpensive enough that they are not worth sending away for professional tuning – after all, it’s hard to justify paying, at minimum, $25 + round-trip shipping for a nib that costs $13 to replace. Yet they also have inconsistencies in their quality. Specifically, out of the fifteen Lamy steel nibs I had directly experienced prior to ordering from Dan (1 extra fine, 4 fines, 3 mediums, 2 broads, and 5 1.5 mm stubs), 7 of them were anywhere from “not great” to “literally would not write without modification” out of the box. Even the ones that would write were often very dry and scratchy – unpleasant, to say the least.
Enter Dan Smith. Included in the extremely reasonable price of the nib, he will tune and smooth it so when it arrives to you, you can easily swap it on to your pen with the confidence that it will write the way you want it to right out of the box. I ordered a 1.1 mm stub (Z50) and a medium (Z53) from Dan and both were nice, wet nibs right out of the box with just a hint of feedback, exactly as I requested. I examined both under a loupe before swapping them onto my pens and honestly found the adjustments he made to be visibly incredible – not only had he very subtly reshaped both nibs (presumably to accommodate the heaver ink flow), but I could also see how he’d very slightly reground the writing surface to smooth it and ensure that the subtly reshaped nib body didn’t make the tines scratchy or cause hard starting.
My wife and I agreed that the 1.1 stub I received from Dan is either THE single best nib either of us owns, or it’s tied for first (with my 3776 Century), putting it above even the gold nibs we own from Omas, Visconti, Aurora, Platinum, and Pilot. Bravo – I am sure we will be repeat customers.
