The Platinum President is one of the unsung greats of the fountain pen world. I purchased mine here about a year ago. I chose a broad nib and got the cursive italic grind on it.
I am very happy with this pen. Its classic appearance hides a comfortable pen and a good writer. The pen has a comfortable balance and size, and the presence of the threads on the section is not a problem. I don’t feel the threads when I write and yet they seem to help prevent the pen becoming too slippery in this hot summer weather.
Since the nib has been ground, it is not exactly an authentic Platinum experience. That said, I requested that it feel like a Platinum nib. Mr. Smith did well grinding it in a way that it’s not over smooth and gives the right amount of feed back. The cursive italic grind was also quite expressive without being too broad to be useful.
This isn’t a model that gets a lot of attention in the fountain pen world. Part of that may be that it’s a cartridge/converter pen. I’ll admit some slight disappointment at that. At the same time, this also makes it very easy to clean and to switch inks. And, really, the only time I notice is when I fill or clean the pen. The rest of the time, it doesn’t matter. Of course, a converter does not hold as much ink as a self-filler, but it seems to be adequate ink for a day of writing.
It should be noted that the selection of finishes on this pen is not as vast as the 3776 line. It seems almost as though Platinum has ignored this model. At the same time, there are some models like the Izumo that use the same nib and a similar design with exotic urushi, maki-e, and wood finishes. Of course, those finishes come at a much greater cost.

Having previously ordered a 3776 with a stub modification from The Nibsmith I purchased the President with a broad nib which Mr Smith at my request also fashioned into a stub. As per the previous reviewer’s comments the President tends to go below the radar somewhat. It is a little larger than the 3776 and has a girthier section (the 3776 has a stepdown from the barrel to the section). The pen performs flawlessly of course and the stub modification leads to line variation but is not too wide and it makes an excellent everyday writer. The Platinum converter is fuss-free with very good ink delivery. Interestingly the Platinum nib despite being 18K is actually stiffer than the 14k 3776 nib which has modest flex. I like them both. I prefer the 3776 nib however the President is a little more comfortable in the hand. I would happily recommend either especially with the nib modification courtesy of the NibSmith!
